The Hungarian procedure has two halves: a visa abroad and a permit in Hungary. Most mistakes happen at the joint, with deadlines. Here is the order as OIF describes it, checked on 26 October 2026 on the OIF factsheet and FAQ.

Step 1. Prepare the source of funds

Before anything else I check where the money comes from. OIF wants proof of the lawful origin of the funds: a public or private deed (for example a sale contract or a gift deed), or proof of taxable income from work or business. Recent documents are expected. If this part is weak, nothing else matters.

Step 2. The guest investor visa

You apply at a Hungarian consulate in the country of your citizenship or of your permanent or habitual residence. The documents OIF lists:

  • the application form;
  • a certificate on MNB-registered fund units, or a declaration of the planned investment with a bank certificate showing the money is available;
  • proof of lawful origin of the funds;
  • a document on your accommodation address in Hungary;
  • a valid travel document;
  • one photo.

The visa fee is EUR 110. The visa is valid for 6 months and cannot be extended. OIF checks UN and EU sanctions at this stage, and it may revoke the visa for a Schengen alert, an expulsion order or false data. Health insurance and means of subsistence are proven here, not later, according to the FAQ.

Step 3. The investment

If you applied with a declaration, the investment must be completed within 3 months of the visa being issued, according to OIF. You then upload the proof through Enter Hungary within 3 months of entry. BRIDGES describes the window as 3 months from first entry. I would follow the stricter OIF reading and count from the visa date.

Step 4. The residence permit in Hungary

You apply only from inside Hungary, within 30 days of first entry. There are two ways:

  1. Online through Enter Hungary. A legal representative can file only this way.
  2. In person at an OIF regional directorate. In Budapest and Pest county this is the Central Regional Directorate, by appointment only.

Either way you must come in person for fingerprints and a photo. Documents: a valid passport, one photo, and proof of accommodation (a lease, a courtesy accommodation statement, ownership or a paid reservation). The investment proof is uploaded as a remedy of deficiency. The fee from the OIF list is HUF 26,000 online or HUF 39,000 in person.

Step 5. Decision and card

OIF’s administrative deadline is 21 days, not counting the time to prove the investment or to fix missing documents. The card is sent by post. If refused, you can appeal within 8 days, and OIF says you can also apply again.

How long it really takes

SourceWhat it says
OIF21 days for the permit decision
BRIDGES, golden visa articlereview about 4 to 6 weeks
BRIDGES, programme page4 to 6 months to status
BRIDGES, residence vs citizenship articleabout 6 months in total, including due diligence, visa, investment and card

These are not contradictions so much as different starting points. Plan for about half a year.

After you get the card

Report any change in your investment data to OIF within 5 days. Apply to extend at least 30 days before expiry, online, while still holding the units. The permit may be valid longer than your passport, the FAQ says, so renew your passport in time and inform OIF.
